The Metal Plate That Tells You More Than Your Quote Does

Every furnace, condenser, and water heater carries a label stamped with the one part of the deal nobody can round off. Here is how to actually read it.

A homeowner called us last winter holding two quotes for a replacement heat pump. One salesperson had told her the outdoor unit was “a 16 SEER2 system.” The other said “high-efficiency, 16 SEER.” She wanted to know which one was telling the truth.

Neither quote was lying, exactly. Neither was answering the question either. The number that actually mattered was standing eight feet away from her, riveted to the side of her own equipment, and nobody had mentioned it.

The short answer

The nameplate — the metal or foil label fixed to the cabinet of any piece of mechanical equipment — is the one part of the transaction nobody can round off in conversation. Four fields on it matter on almost anything you own: model number, capacity, efficiency rating, and electrical requirements. Everything else stamped on the label is manufacturing detail you can skip. Read those four fields off your existing equipment before you read a single quote, and you have a fixed point of comparison that no sales conversation can move.

Why the nameplate is the one honest number

A quote is a negotiated document. It gets written under time pressure, it gets copied from the last job, and the person writing it is trying to close a sale, not produce an engineering record. None of that makes it dishonest — it makes it human.

A nameplate is a different kind of document. It exists because a manufacturer had to certify the equipment’s capacity and efficiency to a testing body (AHRI, for most residential HVAC equipment) before it could legally carry that rating at all. The number on the plate is the number the equipment was tested at. Nobody at your dining room table can adjust it, and nobody who installs the unit can either.

That is why “read the nameplate” is the whole method this site is built on: when a quote and the equipment disagree, the equipment is right.

What to look for, by equipment type

Furnace

Two numbers matter most, and one of them is easy to misread.

  • Input, in BTU/h. How much gas the furnace burns. This is the number people mean when they say “an 80,000 BTU furnace.”
  • AFUE, as a percentage. How much of that fuel becomes heat in your house instead of heat going up the flue. An 80% furnace turns 80,000 BTU/h of gas into roughly 64,000 BTU/h of delivered heat. A 96% furnace turns the same gas into about 76,800.

The trap: if your old furnace was 80% and the replacement is 96%, matching the input rating gives you a meaningfully larger output than you had before. Ask for the output rating, not just the input, if the quote doesn’t already say both.

Central AC and heat pumps

A split system has two nameplates, not one — the outdoor condenser and the indoor coil each carry their own — and that is exactly where that caller’s question ran into trouble.

  • Capacity, usually in BTU/h (36,000 BTU/h is a 3-ton system; 12,000 BTU/h per ton is the conversion).
  • SEER2, the current efficiency rating (SEER2 replaced the older SEER rating for equipment manufactured after January 2023 — if you’re reading an older unit, you’ll see SEER instead, and the two numbers are not directly comparable).
  • Refrigerant type and charge, e.g. R-410A and the number of pounds the system holds.
  • Electrical: MCA and MOCP. Minimum Circuit Ampacity and Maximum Overcurrent Protection — what the disconnect and breaker need to be sized for. If a quote proposes a bigger condenser than you have now, this is where a breaker upgrade shows up.

Here’s the part that trips up almost every homeowner we’ve talked to: the SEER2 number stamped on the outdoor condenser is only accurate for that unit paired with a specific, matched indoor coil. The manufacturer registers that exact pairing with AHRI and issues a certificate for it. A condenser alone doesn’t have a real-world efficiency — the system does. If a contractor is reusing your old indoor coil with a new outdoor unit, ask whether the pairing has actually been verified, not assumed.

Water heater

  • Capacity, in gallons — and note that this is a nominal number; the actual stored volume is usually a few gallons less.
  • Input, in BTU/h for gas or kW for electric.
  • UEF (Uniform Energy Factor). This replaced the older EF rating in 2017. If you’re comparing a quote against a water heater installed before then, you’re looking at two different scales — don’t put them side by side and assume the bigger number wins.
  • Recovery rate, in gallons per hour — how fast it reheats a depleted tank. This matters more than tank size for a household that runs out of hot water mid-shower.

What a bad answer sounds like

Ask a contractor to walk you through the nameplate on the equipment they’re proposing, and listen for the dodge.

“Don’t worry about the numbers, we’ll match what you have” answers a question you didn’t ask. Matching what you have only makes sense if what you have was sized correctly in the first place — plenty of existing systems weren’t.

“It’s basically the same as SEER, just a different name” is the answer that sent that caller looking for a real one. SEER2 testing changed the airflow conditions equipment is measured under; a system rated 16 under the old standard is not the same system rated 16 under the new one.

“The efficiency’s on the condenser, that’s what you’re getting” skips the coil-pairing question entirely — sometimes because the installer hasn’t checked, sometimes because they don’t know to.

A straight answer sounds specific: a model number, a rating, and where on the equipment they read it from. If you can’t get that, you’re free to go find the nameplate yourself. It’s usually a rectangular label on the side or top of the cabinet, sometimes inside a small door — every unit has one, and none of them are hidden on purpose.
